Food Of The Day- Moimoi

Moimoi or Moyi-Moyi is a Nigerian steamed bean pudding made from a mixture of washed and peeled black-eyed peas, onions and fresh ground peppers (usually a combination of bell peppers and chili or scotch bonnet). It is a protein-rich food that is a staple in Nigeria. Some adaptations also put apples in MoiMoi. It originated from either Eastern Nigerian or South-West Nigeria.

MoiMoi is prepared by first soaking the beans in cold water until they are soft enough to remove the fine outer covering or peel. Then they are ground or blended (using a blender) until a fine paste is achieved. Salt, bouillon cube, dried crayfish, vegetable oil (or any edible oil such as palm oil) and other seasonings are added to taste. Some add sardines, corned beef, sliced boiled eggs, or a combination of these and other 'garnishes' to liven up MoiMoi. Such is referred to as having 'x' number of lives, 'x' representing the number of garnishes added. The most touted is "MoiMoi elemi meje", which translates to Moi Moi with 7 lives.

Moi Moi usually comes in a slanted pyramid shape or a cylindrical shape, owing to the mold it is poured into prior to cooking. The pyramid shape comes from the traditional broad "ewe eran" (Thaumatococcus daniellii) or banana leaves fashioned into a cone in one's palm, then the seasoned and garnished liquid is poured into the leaves, which is then folded.

The cylindrical shapes come from empty cans of tomato sauce used in preparation of other dishes. Once placed in its mold, it is placed in a large pot about a tenth filled with water. The water is the source of steam that cooks the MoiMoi. MoiMoi is eaten alone or with bread as a snack, with rice as a meal or with ogi (corn or millet porridge) for breakfast or supper. it can also be taken with garri in the afternoon.

As part of Social Media Week Lagos 2015, on Thursday February 26^th, EiE Nigeriawill host its 2^nd annual evening of music, spoken word and short talks to celebrate the freedom that social media provides Nigerian citizens despite censorship in traditional media – print, radio and TV.

This year, Oritse Femi, Brymo, Aduke, Efe Paul headline the evening, while the inimitable Denrele hosts. Kayode Ogundamisi of Sahara Reporters will give one of the short talks.

Last year, the concerts were headlined by Seun Kuti and Omawumi.

In support of EiE’s ongoing voter education campaign, the concert will be FREE to those who have their PVCs and those without will pay a token of N400 to gain entrance into Freedom Park.

The evening will start at 6 pm and it promises to be one of the highlights of Social Media Week Lagos 2015.

Over 700 Resident Doctors Have Not Been Paid 7Months Salaries? LUTH - READ ME

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest over the non-payment of their outstanding seven month salaries.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the doctors, who were dressed in their medical kits, went round the hospital complex chanting various anti-management songs.

They also displayed placards with various inscriptions, including “Many Doctors are still being Owed Seven Months Salary; LUTH Management, Ministry of Health, Accountant-General of the Federation and Budget Office Enough is Enough’’.

“No Respite yet on Poor Water and Power Supply; Inadequate Materials and Consumables; Non-payment of our December Salary, and “Stagnation of Many Doctors for Years at same Salary Grade Level”.

The President of the association, Dr Ramon Moronkola, told NAN that the protest was to press for the payment of salaries of 700 resident doctors in the hospital.

Moronkola said that resident doctors who were being owed included registrars, senior registrars and house officers of the hospital.

“This protest is to register our displeasure over the non-payment of our seven months’ salary since July, 2014 till date.

“Depending on our different cadres, some have not been paid December salary; the issue of stagnation of salary grade level and non-payment of three months pension refund.

“The poor working conditions in LUTH such as epileptic power supply and lack of water supply are not helping our training.

“We have had meetings with the management but nothing is being done to address these issues.

“We had the worst Christmas and New Year celebrations because we were not paid and yet, we have been patient and diligent at our work,’’ he said.

Moronkola, however, urged the Federal Ministry of Health, the Accountant-General of the Federation, Budget Office and the LUTH management to do the needful and alleviate the sufferings of doctors.

A major European obesity investigation has called for urgent action to prevent obesity in women of child-bearing age.  The authors, including a team from Edinburgh University, say children born to overweight mothers are at greater risk of health problems in later life. They say every pregnant woman should have access to dieticians and psychologists to help protect the health of their future children.

Long-term consequences 

In one of the most extensive studies to question whether the health of mothers-to-be can have long-term consequences on their offspring, scientists pulled together several pieces of research across Europe.  One key study, involving 13,000 individuals, revealed that babies born to overweight mothers are more likely to suffer

heart disease or strokes or develop type 2 diabetes in later life.  Another analysis from Edinburgh University found that obese women eat a diet richer in saturated fats and poorer in vitamins and minerals during their pregnancy compared to slim women. 

In early work, including animal studies, scientists found the placenta of females who ate a high fat diet offered less protection to the foetus from the stress hormone, cortisol.  Offspring were more likely to be small and to suffer mood disorders in later life. Overall project leader Dr Patricia Iozzo, from the National Research Council, Pisa, Italy, said: "Attention needs to be devoted to the prevention of obesity and becoming overweight among young girls, representing tomorrow's mothers."

Dr Iozzo says the period at the end of pregnancy is particularly important. Her work suggests babies' metabolic health - including the fats and sugars in their blood - may be worse if mothers put on unhealthy amounts of weight at this time. "I feel the message is a positive one. Mothers can do a lot during pregnancy to look after the future health of their children. They must under no circumstances stop eating though. They should ensure they have a balanced diet and make sure they are physically active. And I think every mother should have access to a team of health workers during pregnancy - including not just midwives and obstetricians but psychologists and dieticians too."

The studies found that in the two hours after an outburst of anger, the relative risk of heart attack and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) – when the heart muscle doesn’t get enough oxygen-rich blood, increased by nearly five times, while the risk of ischemic stroke and cardiac arrhythmia increased by more than three times.

Otuneye told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the abnormal swelling could be identified as hernia when diagnosed by a doctor.

According to him, hernia, which is common in male children, is usually an abnormal opening in the body cavity where the internal organs passes through.“The common type of hernia in children is the inguinal and umbilical hernia, inguinal occurs when tissue pushes through a weak spot in the groin muscle. “Most inguinal hernias happen because an opening in the muscle wall does not close before birth as it should. The umbilical involve protrusion of intra abdominal contents through a weakness at the site of passage of the umbilical cord through the abdominal wall,” Otuneye said.

Dr Moses Fache, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, says bleeding in pregnancy is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality. Fache, of NISA Premier Hospital , Jabi, Abuja, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.

He said that bleeding in pregnancy was abnormal as it threatens the well-being of both mother and the foetus.He therefore, stressed the need to treat such a condition urgently, to arrest the cause. “Bleeding in pregnancy and abnormal bleeding during and after birth signify abnormality that should be treated urgently.” According to him, bleeding early in pregnancy is referred to as “threatened miscarriage” , meaning that the woman was at risk of losing the pregnancy.

NAFDAC to Set Pace For Food Safety In Africa.

Barely two weeks after the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and United States Pharmacopeia (USP) awarded National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) with ISO/IEC 17025:2005 certification, the agency is on the verge of being declared the regional centre for food safety, a feat that has never been attained in the country. This is as its food laboratory in Oshodi has been pre-selected by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as Africa’s Regional Designated Centre (RDC) for food safety.

While announcing the international body’s intention, experts of IAEA, Prof. Eric Mitema and Ardjouma Dembele, in collaboration, said they are sure that Nigeria will meet the basic requirements needed for its approval as Africa’s RDC for food safety. They spoke during the media briefing of the pre-selection phase in Lagos recently.

Crisis Looms As Lagos Doctors Begin Strike

Doctors in the employ of the Lagos State Government have begun a three-day warning strike. They also warned that if the authorities did not meet their demands, which include the payment of their May 2012 as well as August/September 2014 salaries by March 4, they would embark on a full-scale action.
