The University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) said on Tuesday that it has joined the league of teaching hospitals in the country that have successfully carried out Invitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment.
Prof. Abdulwaheed Olatinwo, Chief Medical Director of UITH said that a 33- year-old woman’s eggs was fertilised through a process known as Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection.
According to him, this action brought an end to her nine years of infertility since her marriage to her 65-year-old husband.
Olatinwo said that infertility in marriage should not be a problem for the wife alone but also for the husband.
He said that the couple especially the woman was managed in the hospital for one year before she was delivered of a baby boy via caesarean section after a period of 38 weeks.
The CMD added that the baby weighed 3.25kg, while expressing delight, he commended the efforts of the members of staff involved in the success of the birth.
``With more dedication and better facilities the nation could become Africa’s medical hub,” he said.
